Back in the early 1970s, our colleague, Tommy Wyche, known as “the godfather of conservation” in South Carolina, began his efforts to protect the Blue Ridge Escarpment, a mountain bridge of approximately 400,000 acres that stretches across the Upstate. His efforts, which utilize the legal tools of conservation easements and land trusts, have resulted in the protection of 100,000 acres, but, for Tommy, more work remains.
