The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control’s (DHEC) Office of Ocean and Coastal Resource Management has implemented its emergency operations plan in preparation for Hurricane Irma. DHEC issued emergency orders to local governments to allow beachfront property owners to conduct minor renourishment, sand scraping or sandbag installation to provide temporary protection. These emergency orders are effective for 60 days. If, after the expiration of the orders, a structure remains in imminent danger, property owners may request individual emergency orders for extended protection. DHEC has also issued an emergency order for marine debris removal to allow the general public to remove boats and debris from critical areas. The emergency orders are available on DHEC’s Hurricane Irma website.
