More food waste is sent to landfills and incinerators than any other waste, including plastics and metals combined. In 2013, 37 million tons of food waste were generated and thrown into landfills or incinerators. In addition to the volume it takes, food in landfills emits methane. To help reduce food waste, EPA has joined Miriam’s Kitchen and Western Presbyterian Church to announce a new Food Steward’s initiative. Faith groups who sign up to be EPA Food Stewards will receive a toolkit of tips and resources on how they can reduce food waste, such as how to donate more food and organize kitchens to consume older food first. You can learn more about the Food Steward’s Pledge, including how to sign, by clicking here.
