EPA’s Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program collects greenhouse gas information from over 8,000 facilities in the largest emitting industries, including power plants, iron and steel mills, landfills, and oil and gas production and refining. In late October, EPA released greenhouse gas emissions data for large facilities. The most recent data for 2012 reveals that in the two years since the reporting requirements were initiated, emissions from power plants have decreased 10 percent, a decrease that is primarily attributable to the plants’ transition from coal to natural gas for electricity generation.
