Justice

A Message from our Executive Committee Chair, Tally Parham Casey:

As South Carolina lawyers, we took an oath to “assist the defenseless or oppressed by ensuring that justice is available to all citizens….”

We cannot tolerate the persistent violence against our African-American brothers and sisters.  As friends, we cannot be silent.  The injustice is antithetical to our core values as a firm, as a profession, and as a society.

Because of our commitment to and reverence for the rule of law, we find it particularly distressing and inappropriate when the apparatuses of law enforcement and justice do not treat all as equal before the law.

One of Wyche’s core values is:  We Are One Team.  We are all in this together.  When one of us succeeds, we all succeed.   We respect, trust, and support one another.

That support has never been more important.

The way forward demands much of us.  Let us find the courage to self-examine, to have the difficult conversations, to work for a better future – to ensure that our path does indeed bend towards justice.

For now, I offer you the words of the poet Morgan Harper Nichols:

Empathy:

Let me hold the door for you.
I may have never walked
A mile in your shoes,
But I can see that
Your soles are worn
And your strength is torn
Under the weight of a story
I have never lived before.
So let me hold the door for you.
After all you’ve walked through,
It’s the least I can do.
