Greenville’s Leading Lawyers

The August 2009 edition of Greenville Business Magazine includes a section entitled “Greenville’s Leading Lawyers,” with a feature on Wyche attorney Wallace Lightsey.

The article written by Kristi Keenan of the Greenville Business Magazine includes the full list of South Carolina’s Leading Lawyers put out by Chambers and Partners, with features on the highest ranking Greenville attorneys- Kathy McKinney, Larry Estridge, and Wallace Lightsey. For twenty years, the Chambers and Partners organization has published the leading worldwide directories of the legal profession based on the extensive and objective research of their 100 full-time researchers. The criteria for selection are set by waht clients value most – technical legal ability, professional conduct, client service, commercial astuteness, diligence and commitment. Chambers ranks law firms and individual lawyers in bands from 1-6, with 1 being the best.

Wallace Lightsey was ranked in Band 1 for Commercial Litigation. Keenan writes that “You wouldn’t initially shake hands with Wallace Lightsey, take in his gentle smile, and assume he’s a bulldog in court, but his reputation clearly says otherwise. With more than 50 jury trials under his belt, it’s safe to say that litigation is his forte.”

Wallace told Keenan, “When I first started practice, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do, so I tried both litigation and corporate work. The first time I was on my feet in the courtroom, I was hooked on litigation and have gone that direction since then. I love making arguments, and I hate to admit it, but I love demolishing the other side.”

Keenan writes of Wallace’s background with an undergraduate degree from Duke University and a law degree from Harvard. Before practicing at Wyche, he was a clerk for Judge John Minor Wisdom of the United States Court of Appeals as well as a clerk for Chief Justice Warren E. Berger at the United States Supreme Court in Washington, D.C. Speaking of his decision to move to Greenville from D.C. to work at Wyche, Wallace says “I had never seen any firm anywhere in the country that had such a high caliber group of lawyers and such as a sophisticated practice as this firm.”

Wallace’s tenure with Wyche has been filled with litigation cases concerning everything from intellectual property to First Amendment issues, and with clients such as The New York Times Company, The Associated Press, and Forbes.
